Six months after Elizabeth conceived, the angel Gabriel visited a young virgin girl named Mary, who was pledged to be married. Although she was preparing for her marriage, God had an even greater and more special plan for her life. She was not just an ordinary girl, but was highly favored. “Favor” means unmerited grace. Through this amazing grace, Mary was chosen to bring the Messiah, the Son of God and Savior into the world!
Mary was a virgin, and so she questioned how this would be possible. Humanly, this was impossible, but with God, all things are possible. Gabriel assured her that this would not be done through her own effort, but through the working of the Holy Spirit, who would overshadow her. We also cannot accomplish God’s work on our own, but must rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.
Mary submitted herself completely to the Lord, replying, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” She did not doubt or question, but yielded to the word of the Lord. She surrendered her own plans to fulfill God’s plans. God is looking for those who will say yes to him and trust in his ultimate purpose. In doing so, we will give birth to his greater will and plan for our lives.
Application: Father, you use those who fully yield to you. I am your servant. Take my life and do as you desire, and may your word to me be fulfilled.
One Word: I am the Lord’s servant
