In this passage, God warns his people of the judgment that would come upon them for their disobedience. The Lord describes a progression of rebellion and increasing punishment, which would become seven times worse. The number seven may signify the completeness of God’s judgment and perfect will. He would bring sudden terror, disease, and famine upon them. Their enemies would defeat them and rule over them, leaving the land in complete devastation. Packs of wild animals would attack them and their children, and their cities would be besieged. In their desperation, they would suffer such severe famine that they would resort to eating their own children (2 Kings 6:26-29). Finally, God’s people would be carried away from the promised land into exile as prisoners of war,. losing their freedom and returning to slavery. This was a sign that God was against his people, and they were suffering under his wrath on account of their sins.

Exactly as the Lord warned in this passage, his people hardened their hearts towards him, turned away from his commands, and gave themselves over to idol worship. As a result, they were carried into exile. Yet God’s desire was to bring them to repentance and to restore them.
Application: Father, you discipline those you love. Help us to repent of our rebellion against you.
