The offerings made by his people were sacred. Because they were considered holy, the priests were required to handle them with holiness. Their mishandling dishonored the holy God, for their conduct reflected his holiness. Through Christ Jesus, believers have been made clean and holy. Yet we are still called to live with reverence before him. We either honor or dishonor him. Therefore, we must ensure that our daily conduct honors him.

The priests were required to be ceremonially clean before approaching or eating sacred offerings. If a priest had a skin disease, a bodily discharge, or something unclean had touched his body, he was forbidden from eating the holy food until evening. To come to God and have fellowship with him, we must set ourselves apart from sinful practices and live in purity by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The sacred offerings were given only to the priest and his family. Guests or hired workers were not permitted to eat them. However, those who were purchased with money or born in the priest’s household could partake. The gifts of God, such as his words, his grace, and the opportunity to worship him, must be regarded with reverence and obedience.
