In chapters 10-12, Paul appealed to the Corinthians by testifying to God’s work among them through his labor. To some in Corinth, Paul appeared timid in person but bold when away—they judged him by outward appearances. Paul reminded them that he was fighting a spiritual battle. He worked to bring everything—even all thoughts—under the authority of Christ. Paul worked among the Corinthian Christians with God-given authority. He did so to build them up as obedient people of God, whether he was present or not.

Paul then spoke of those who commended themselves and compared themselves with others. Their boasting was unwise. Paul chose to boast within the sphere of service to which God called him, and that included his work in Corinth. Paul was proud of the work God did to plant gospel faith among the Corinthians. God used Paul to grow their faith, and Paul hoped that this gospel work would expand greatly to other regions. Paul didn’t mind boasting, but he emphasized that one who boasts should boast in the Lord. Paul did not commend himself, but in all things sought the Lord’s commendation.
Application: Lord, help me to fight the spiritual battle, bring others to obedience to Christ, and seek the Lord’s blessing alone.
