The Jewish leaders handed Jesus over to Pilate to be executed. Judas was filled with remorse, but he did not turn to God in faith. Instead, he faced his own tragic ending (5).

Pilate also recognized Jesus’ innocence (18) and tried to release Jesus utilizing his political power (15) by letting the crowd choose between a notorious criminal, Barabbas, and Jesus. Pilate’s attempt to resolve the issue within his reason failed, ironically emphasizing the spiritual reality that Jesus took the place of the worst sinner (Rom 5:8).

Although Pilate attempted to wash his hands of responsibility, he could not escape the fact that he held the final decision (24). In the end, despite the human authority he had over the Jewish leaders, Pilate gave in to the pressure and handed Jesus over to be crucified (26). What would you do with Jesus today? Are you willing to admit to your weakness and remorse, to humbly ask for forgiveness and strength?
Application: Father, thank you for the freedom we receive in you. Please give me the strength to live before you, instead of depending on my own strength. Please help me to stand by Jesus today.
