Jesus foretold that his disciples would all fall away. Peter insisted that he would never betray him, even to the point of death, but Jesus knew the weakness of the flesh (41).

In Gethsemane, Jesus faced the agony of the cross. He did not hide his sorrowful, troubled heart from his disciples and asked them to support him in prayer (38). Jesus honestly confessed his desire to have the cup of suffering taken away from him, but he also asked for the fulfillment of God’s will, not his own will (39). While the disciples slept, trusting their own willpower, Jesus watched and prayed. The prayer did not take the cup away from him; rather, he gained the strength to take it to carry out the will of God (45).

When the mob arrived to arrest him, Jesus was ready to face the challenge with the strength he had gained from the Lord (53,54). In contrast, the disciples fled in fear, quickly wearing down their self-confidence (56b).
Application: Father, thank you for listening to my prayers. Please help me to pray in my agony, to hear your voice, and to gain new strength in your sovereign power.
