Throughout Israel’s history, whenever they forgot God and turned away from him, he disciplined them by allowing their enemies to oppress them. In the midst of their suffering, they returned to God and cried out for his mercy. This psalm reflects Israel’s experience of oppression and their cries for his mercy. The psalmist confesses that God has been their shepherd and they have been his sheep from generation to generation. Are you struggling and feeling hopeless today? Remember that God, your shepherd, cares for you and will faithfully lead you.

Lord, when the world seems broken and your people suffer, remind us of your mercy. As the psalmist cries out for deliverance in Psalm 79, we place our trust not in our own strength but in your unfailing love. Forgive our sins, restore our hope, and let our lives bring glory to your holy name. Amen.
