This psalm is a prayer of blessing for the King of Israel. The prayer asks for prosperity of the kingdom (3, 16), the extension of the king’s rule to distant lands (8-11), and long life for the king (5, 15). Just as importantly, this prayer also reminds the king of his responsibilities, which include judging justly (2) and rescuing the needy from oppressors (4, 12-14).

This psalm was first written for the coronation of Solomon, David’s son, but it is really about Jesus’ kingdom. No human leader could bring perfect justice to earth or live forever. But Jesus fulfilled all of these blessings perfectly. He truly saved the needy and afflicted from oppression. Through Jesus’ holiness and righteousness—and not through shrewd dealings or military power—Jesus’ kingdom will grow to cover the whole earth. Every earthly king dies, but Jesus’ kingdom is an eternal kingdom.

Today, let us pray for all these blessings to come true through Jesus and for his name to be praised on the earth.
Application: Father, thank you for raising up Jesus, our king of peace and righteousness. May his just and prosperous rule come on earth, starting with me.
