This is a psalm of praise written by David when he was older, reflecting on his long life and all that God had done for him (5-6). He knew that God had made his life an example of God’s saving power so that many people could see what it means to live by faith (7).

At the same time, David still had serious present troubles (10-11), and asked God to come quickly again to help him and restore him (1-4, 12-13, 20). David experienced God’s saving power many times throughout his life, so he could remember and draw confidence from these moments. He knew that his job was to tell others of all the righteous deeds he had seen the Lord do. He only asked for strength to complete his mission to declare God’s glory to the next generation (14-18). Singing praise to the Lord, often with music (22), was David’s joy in life, and he had no intention of stopping. What a good example for us to follow!
Application: Father, thank you for saving me in so many ways up to this very day. Help me remember how important it is to tell others about all you have done. May praising you be my joy.
