THE DAY OF THE LORD IS NEAR

Date : Sep 13, 2026
Passage : Zephaniah 1:1~18
Keyverse : 7

The Lord is the judge of all, and when he judges, his judgment is complete. His intention is to purge idol worship from the earth. In this passage, God proclaims judgment against his people Judah and the holy city Jerusalem because they turned their backs on him. Their culture and society were deeply steeped in idol worship. Like them, idol worship numbs us to the sicknesses within our culture. We follow celebrities, sports legends, and fashionable trends more passionately than we follow God. Many people cling to the idols of materialism and pleasure-seeking. The prophet Zephaniah warns them–and us–that God’s judgment is near. God will burn up the rebellious, but the holy remnant who have repented will be consecrated in him. Let us turn back to God before it is too late.

The Lord was also angry at his people’s complacency. People thought they could get away with anything. But the day of the Lord would come quickly (14). People would be helpless; their money, education, family, and status would not be able to save them. Our God is a jealous God whose jealousy will consume the entire earth (18). Let us fear God, desire his holiness, and have the courage to live wisely as his holy remnant.
Application: Father, thank you for your warning. Help me to guard my heart from idols, turn to you in repentance, and live as your holy remnant.
One Word: God’s Judgment Day is near
