Sin is not only in our nature; we also actively sin. Therefore, we must be alert to our sinful actions and confess them. If we hear a lie and don’t expose it, we are guilty of sin (1). We must be committed to the truth in our lives and communities. When we fail, we must take responsibility to restore trust.

The second sin mentioned in this passage is touching unclean things, which could inadvertently spread disease (2-3). Next in importance is breaking a promise. This sin weakens trust and brings harm to others. (4) Family members’ hearts are especially broken by broken promises. Have we made promises to God to spend more time in his word and prayer, or to witness to and shepherd others, and not kept them? These broken promises must be confessed and repented, too.

Often, people don’t realize they have sinned. But once they have, they must get right with God (6-13). The Israelites sacrificed a lamb, a pair of doves or pigeons, or, at the very least, fine flour. No oil or incense was added to the sin offering, because of the bitterness of sin. The blood was spread on the altar to atone for sin. We must confess our sins and trust in the atoning blood of the Son Jesus to bring us forgiveness and cover our sins.
Application: Father, I confess my sins. Praise Jesus who shed his atoning blood for my sins!
