The Lord brought one more accusation against Israel. They had spoken arrogantly against the Lord by saying it was pointless to serve the Lord. They saw the arrogant as blessed and the evildoers prosper. This is a question people have wrestled with since Biblical times. Why is it that the wicked seem to do so well, while those who serve God struggle? This passage assures us that the Lord sees and hears all. He sees those who revere him, and he will bless them. One day the Lord will act. Then the wicked will be punished but the Lord will show compassion on those who love and fear him.
The Lord promises that the day of the Lord is coming. One day, the Lord will come and, on that day, the wicked will surely perish, while those who revere the Lord will be found righteous. There will be much rejoicing among the righteous on that day. But before then, the Lord would send the prophet Elijah. This would be John the Baptist, who came to prepare the way for our Lord Jesus Christ (Mt11:14).
Application: Father, it seems sometimes that the wicked prosper and your people suffer. Give us patience to wait on your blessing.
One Word: Revere the name of the Lord
