After reminding the people of Israel and Judah that they were God’s creation, Malachi rebuked them for their unfaithfulness to God. They had done an injustice to the covenant they had with God by their unfaithfulness. They had divorced their God-fearing wives and married foreign women who worshipped other gods. Malachi prayed that those who married foreign women would be thrown out of the Lord’s community. Then they hypocritically wept because the Lord had rejected them.
Again, Malachi reminds them that they belong to the Lord. And what did the Lord want from them? He wants godly offspring. Being unfaithful to the wives of their youth (their believing wives they had divorced), was not going to produce what God wanted. As it was, they had done violence against them. God views marriage as sacred. There are serious consequences when this covenant is betrayed. God hates divorce.
Application: Father, help us to be faithful to your covenant.
One Word: Be faithful to the Lord
