A demon-possessed man who had been blind and mute was brought to Jesus and received healing (22). When the Pharisees saw the strong evidence of Jesus’ authority as the promised Messiah (23), they accused Jesus of casting demons out with the authority of Beelzebul.
Jesus responded by i) telling them common sense that a demon would not work against his own kingdom (26), ii) questioning their own exorcism and the source of their authority (27), and iii) challenging them to acknowledge the possibility of the coming of God’s kingdom by seeing the spiritual authority of Jesus (28,29). Even if they felt uncomfortable about accepting Jesus as the promised Messiah immediately, they were to examine his work, his preaching, and the fruit of his ministry, considering the words spoken by the prophets. Blasphemy toward the Holy Spirit was unforgivable (32).
