In the first half of the psalm, the people pray for their king (likely David) as he goes to war on their behalf. They pray for protection and victory from God. In the second half, the psalmist expresses his trust in God. He understands that he is the one whom he should depend on, not his horses or chariots.
It is easy to focus on our own resources when we face problems (in this psalm, a war) or when we care for others who do. However, the psalmist instructs us to trust in God’s transcendent wisdom and resources, instead of ours.
God wants us to trust him with all decisions and matters, big and small. As we trust God and place our lives in his hands, he not only fills our hearts with his peace (Philippians 4:7) but makes his ultimate victory over death very tangible in our lives, in ways we never expected.
Application: Father, thank you for your victory over sin and death.
One Word: Trust God who gives you victory
