Ahaz became king when he was twenty years old. Unlike his father Jotham, he did not honor God. Instead, he followed the pattern of pagan idol worship, even giving his children as sacrifices (2,3).
God did not tolerate his evil deeds but delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram and the king of Israel. Ahaz’s unfaithfulness led his people into defeat and destruction (5.6). Twenty thousand, including Ahaz’s son and the highest-ranking officer, were killed, and two hundred thousand were taken as captives to Samaria (8).
Obed, the prophet, confronted the victorious Israelites, reminding them that their triumph was not due to their merit, but was God's judgment upon Judah for their great wickedness. The hand of God Almighty was behind their success. His words stirred the fear of God in their hearts, for they too were guilty of the same sins. Fearing further judgment, they showed mercy, returning the captives along with everything they had plundered (14). Obed’s intervention prevented a greater tragedy between Judah and Israel, both of whom God called his own people.
