AMAZIAH’S DOWNFALL

Date : Nov 30, 2025
Passage : 2Chronicles 25:14~28
Keyverse : 20

Upon defeating the Edomites, which was a demonstration of God’s strength and the result of Amaziah’s obedience (25:7-8,10a), Amaziah proceeded to take Edom’s idols and set them up in Jerusalem. He worshiped the idols of the people he had defeated. The LORD was angry with him. God sent a prophet to rebuke the king. The prophet pointed out how illogical it was to worship Edom’s gods when those same gods could not save Edom from him! Fear and pride made him foolish.

This was Amaziah’s chance to repent but he did not. Amaziah threatened the prophet who stopped rebuking him but gave one final warning that God would destroy him. Amaziah then decided to challenge Israel. The king of Israel warned him, but Amaziah would not listen. God had determined to judge Amaziah. As a result, Judah was thoroughly defeated which was also in accordance with God’s word (8, 20). A section of the Jerusalem wall was broken down. Gold, silver, and temple articles were taken away. Later, people conspired against Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he had to flee. But the conspirators caught up with him and killed him.

Though Amaziah started well, his reign ended poorly due to fear and pride. Let God rule your heart instead of fear and pride.
Application: Father, help me to have a humble heart so that I may listen to and obey you.
