GOD INSTALLS A NEW KING

Date : Nov 25, 2025
Passage : 2Chronicles 23:1~21
Keyverse : 16

For seven years, Jehoiada the priest hid his nephew (22:11), Joash, the son of Ahaziah and the rightful heir to his father’s throne. During that time, Athaliah, daughter of Ahab, ruled Judah with bloodshed (22:10) and idolatry (17). She did not know about Joash. Then Jehoiada gathered the Levites and the family heads. He entered into a covenant with them to install Joash as king. This was not earthly political intrigue. God fulfilled his promise through Jehoiada (3).

Jehoiada wisely gathered the support of the Levites and family heads as he organized the coronation at the temple of God. The young king was protected as he was introduced. A crown was placed on his head, and he was given a copy of the covenant. Athaliah heard what happened and shouted, “Treason!” But she was caught and put to death while the new king was put on the throne. This brought rejoicing, and Jerusalem was calm (21).

Finally, Jehoiada dedicated the king, the people, and himself to be the LORD’s people. Oversight of the temple was returned to the Levites. Sacrifices were again made with rejoicing and singing. One man of faith, Jehoiada, was used by God to save a nation and continue his covenant.
