REHOBOAM’S BAD DECISION

Date : Nov 10, 2025
Passage : 2Chronicles 10:1~19
Keyverse : 7

Rehoboam assembled all Israel in Shechem for his coronation. Then Jeroboam and all Israel requested their new king to lighten the heavy taxation and forced labor that Solomon had put on them. Rehoboam recognized the seriousness of their request because his answer would determine his forthcoming rule. He asked for three days to make his decision. During that time, he could seek counsel on what to do. It was his wise decision. To make an important decision, we are not to be hasty, but to seek counsel from others and from God.

Rehoboam first consulted the elder counselors who were wise, godly, and experienced. They knew the needs of the suffering people and advised the king to grant them what they asked for. Rehoboam rejected their advice perhaps because if he eased the yoke, his people might perceive him as a weak king. He then sought younger advisors who lacked experience, wisdom, and godliness. They advised him to impose a heavier yoke on the people. Without asking God about his final decision, he announced to the people his harsh rule. All Israel then revolted, leaving only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin under the rule of Rehoboam. So, the kingdom was divided. It is wise to discern godly advice and follow it even if it is against our inclination.
Application: Lord, help me discern godly counsel and follow it humbly, disclaiming my pride and desire.
One Word: Seek advice from God’s word
