During Micah’s life, he witnessed the northern Kingdom of Israel being conquered by the Assyrians. They deported many of the Israelites and resettled their own people and captives in Israel. It was the end of an era for Israel. Yet Micah prophesies about a ruler being born who would usher in a new era of God’s reign in power and peace.

Micah prophesies about a baby being born in Bethlehem of ancient origins. He would come to rule and shepherd the remnants of Israel in the strength of the Lord and his greatness would reach to the ends of the earth.

Jesus was born as a baby in a manger in Bethlehem about 700 years later during the occupation of the Roman Empire. He came as our Good Shepherd, Savior, and Lord to defeat the power of sin and death and give us true peace. Jesus brought God’s kingdom which extends beyond borders and empires and reaches to the ends of the earth. Even today, Jesus reigns as our Lord and Prince of Peace.
Application: Lord, even when all seems to be falling apart, you come to give us strength and peace.
