Paul arrived in Athens alone. He was distressed to see that the great city was so full of idols. Instead of only going to the synagogue, Paul also went to the marketplace. There he preached about Jesus and his resurrection. Jesus is the one that men should worship—not idols. Some philosophers brought him to the Areopagus. Paul’s teaching seemed strange to them—like the latest idea—so they wanted to hear more.
Among the idols in the city was one altar inscribed "to an unknown God." So, Paul began to proclaim to them God, the Creator of heaven and earth, who made all nations of people from one man. He is the one who controls nature and history. God wants all men everywhere to seek him and love him, for we are his offspring. God is not an image made of gold or stone by man's design. He is not just an idea or a concept. God overlooked such ignorance in the past, but now he commands people everywhere to repent. God is, and he has set a day when the world will be judged with justice. He has appointed Jesus as judge and given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead. Some sneered when Paul mentioned the resurrection, but a few wanted to hear more.
Application: Lord, you are not an idea, you are the living God, and you are the judge. Help me to repent and worship you today.
One Word: He will judge the world with justice
