Jacob lived by faith until the end of his life and passed on God’s promises and blessings to his children. Then, Joseph fulfilled his vow to bury his father Jacob among his ancestors in Canaan. Jacob was loved and honored by his family and even all the dignitaries in Egypt joined Joseph in the burial and mourning.
After Jacob’s death, the other sons worried that Joseph would now unleash his revenge against them, so they told him that their father wanted him to forgive them. They even offered themselves up as slaves to Joseph. In response, Joseph explained that though they intended to harm him, God intended it for good, the saving of many lives. Joseph did not let the harsh circumstances dictate his life. Rather, Joseph saw God’s hand of mercy in his life and the bigger picture of God’s plan of salvation. And, later, when Joseph neared death, he wanted his brothers to remember God’s promise and live by faith also.
God establishes his kingdom and salvation in the hearts of all who are seeking His blessing (Jacob), who are mistreated (Joseph), and who are forgiven sinners (Joseph’s brothers). May our pilgrimages also reflect God’s mercy and hope.
Application: Lord, my life and the world seem chaotic and harsh, but may I find peace and faith in your mercy and salvation.
