In time, all of Egypt was affected by the famine. Because God had granted Joseph the wisdom to stockpile grain, everybody in Egypt came to him for food. Joseph collected all the people’s money, and when there was no more money left, he collected all their livestock. Finally, with nothing left to give, the people gave themselves and their land to Pharaoh in exchange for food and seed. In this way, many people survived the famine, and all the people of the land became slaves to Pharaoh.
In the same way the Egyptians came to Joseph for food, we must come to God for salvation. Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God (Deut 8:30). God does not make us slaves to him, but wants us to live life in abundance (Jn 10:10). God sent his son Jesus to save us from our sins and quench our thirst for truth, love, and justice in the world. God gives freely to all those who come to him in the realization that nothing else in the world can truly save us.
