Joseph’s brothers were well treated in Egypt and purchased enough food. But soon after they started for home, Joseph’s servants chased them, accusing one of them of stealing Joseph’s silver cup.
Joseph created a circumstance for them to make a choice. They would either consider Benjamin a loss to save themselves or try to save him even at a personal sacrifice. They once had no sympathy nor conscience to care for their young brother, Joseph, or their old father, Jacob. It was a test and an opportunity for the brothers to show if they had been changed. When the silver cup was found in Benjamin’s sack, even though they were allowed to go on, they all came back to Joseph to plead on their young brother’s behalf.
Judah took leadership, made Benjamin’s case, and volunteered to take Benjamin’s place of punishment. He had seen his father’s agony at the loss of Joseph. He had suffered the consequence of his sin over the years, and he would rather become a slave himself than see the same pain inflicted on his Father. Judah chose not to make the same mistake again by putting his young brother and Father ahead of himself.
Application: Father, thank you for your forgiveness. Please carry me today so that I do not fall into the same sins again.
One Word: A test is a chance for redemption
