This chapter contains the final set of judgments from God. There are seven bowls, each poured out by an angel of the Lord. Each bowl represents God’s wrath and judgment on the sin of the world.
The first bowl brought festering sores on all who worshipped Satan. The second bowl turned the whole sea to blood, killing all marine life. The third bowl did the same to the rivers and the sea. Then the third angel said, “You are just in these judgments, O Holy One, you who are and who were; for they have shed the blood of your prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.” Jesus once said, “All who draw the sword will die by the sword.” (Mt 26:52) Those who shed the blood of God’s people will have their own blood be shed in turn.
The fourth bowl was poured out on the sun, and it scorched people. The fifth plunged the kingdom into darkness. The sixth dried up the Great River The seventh brought a great earthquake and hailstones. But just like Pharaoh when God sent the plagues to Egypt, the people didn’t repent. They cursed God and refused to repent. The judgment of God is fearsome.
Application: Father, wake us up to you and help us to repent our sins. Thank you that when we do, you will save us.
