Elisha sent a young prophet to Jehu to anoint him king over Israel and to tell him to strike down the house of Ahab. After the prophet had done as he was told, the army officers rallied under Jehu at once and proclaimed him as the king of Israel. In his time, God raised Jehu as his instrument of judgment over the house of Ahab.

During this time, Israel was at war with Aram. Joram king of Israel returned to Jezreel to recover from his battle wounds. Jehu stormed into Jezreel like a madman. Joram did not suspect Jehu’s treachery and went out with Ahaziah king of Judah to meet him. At this point Jehu was filled with thoughts of honoring God as an instrument of divine judgment against the house of Ahab. He killed Joram and threw his body onto the land of Naboth. Jehu also killed Ahaziah who had allied with the wicked house of Ahab.

Jezebel was defiant even when judgment and death was on her. Her death fulfilled Elijah’s prophecy. Although it took many years for justice to be done, it happened exactly as it had been prophesied. God’s judgment will come to idolaters and to a land of idolatry and witchcraft in his time.
Application: Lord, our world is full idolatry and evils. Help me to turn away from them and warn the world through Bible study and prayers.
